Images of Mars and Other Features
from Mars Spacecraft
This is a list of links to Mars images
available on the Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) web site. The majority
of these images were acquired by MSSS cameras and include hundreds of
thousands of pictures from Mars Global Surveyor. MSSS is currently
operating three cameras in space: the Mars Global Surveyor Mars
Orbiter Camera and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Context Camera
and Mars Color Imager. Some of the images obtained by these
spacecraft show features other than Mars, such as the martian
moons, Earth, Jupiter, and stars. The public may
suggest new targets for the camera onboard Mars Global Surveyor;
see the
Mars Orbiter Camera Target Request Site
for details and instructions.
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) Context Camera (CTX)
|
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was launched in August 2005 and
began orbiting Mars
in March 2006. MSSS built and operates two cameras on
the spacecraft, the Context Camera and Mars Color Imager.

Mars Polar Lander (MPL) Mars Descent Imager (MARDI)
|
The Mars Polar Lander was launched in January 1999. It was lost
upon arrival at Mars in December 1999. MSSS built and operated
the lander's Mars Descent Imager. No pictures were returned
from Mars; the images posted in 1999 offer a simulation of
the data that were anticipated.

Mars Climate Orbiter (MCO) Mars Color Imager (MARCI)
|
The Mars Climate Orbiter was launched in December 1998. It was lost
upon arrival at Mars in September 1999. MSSS built and operated
the Mars Color Imager. Only 1 picture was returned from the camera.

Mars Observer (MO) Mars Observer Camera (MOC)
|
The Mars Observer spacecraft was launched in September 1992. It
was lost just days before arrival at Mars in August 1993.
MSSS operated the Mars Observer Camera. Pictures of Mars, Jupiter,
and several stars were returned
to Earth before the spacecraft was lost.

Viking 1 and Viking 2 Orbiters
|
The two Viking orbiters were launched in 1975 and reached Mars
in 1976. Viking 2 completed is orbital operations in 1978; Viking 1
continued to acquire data into 1980. MSSS Mars scientists work with
data from Viking and other orbiters in planning their observations
for the Mars-orbiting cameras the company is operating.
